There’s been a lot of excitement around AI, 5G, and cloud computing — and rightly so. These technologies are transforming the way we live and work.

AI lives in data centres. And without energy, there is no AI. But this also means we’re facing massive energy demands that, if unmanaged, could make our progress unsustainable.

That’s why we believe this conversation is critical.

🔒 The session showcased Honeywell’s end-to-end fire safety solutions designed specifically for critical infrastructure like data centers. From the intuitive Inspire-E Series fire alarm panel, the Li-ion Tamer GEN3 that detects off-gassing before thermal runaway, to Gas-based Fire Suppression Systems tailored for high-sensitivity environments—each technology demonstrated how safety, scalability, and intelligence can coexist in one unified system.

💡 As data centers continue to scale and evolve, integrated protection is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. This session highlighted how proactive technologies can protect not only infrastructure, but also people and operations.

🎙 Erick Hadi, our founder also shared a key perspective on how the Nusantara Data Center Academy can help strengthen and amplify Honeywell Fire System’s message—through the lens of education in the data center field. He emphasized the importance of building awareness and knowledge among future data center professionals, ensuring that Honeywell’s fire safety innovations are well understood and adopted. His focus remained on the local data center community, aiming to make Honeywell’s message more accessible, relevant, and impactful across different stakeholders and areas within the industry.

That was the response from Chandra Irawan, when I asked the question:

“𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣, 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮?”

And I think he managed to answer that question.…𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆.

He reminded me that the first principle of Tagar#sustainability is not about technology. It comes from basic principle of 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, including how we design the building facility in the first place.

When I came home, I decided to give some thoughts about it.

Building orientation significantly affects a data center’s cooling requirements, especially in regions with strong afternoon sun.

A west-facing data center is exposed to the most intense solar radiation during the hottest part of the day.

This results in higher heat gain within the building, directly increasing the cooling load required to maintain optimal operating temperatures for servers and equipment.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲.
If your windows face west, you know how hot they get in the afternoon when the sun is strongest.

The same thing happens with data centers.
If a data center faces west, it gets blasted by the hottest sun of the day, making the building much warmer inside.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁
Cooling is a major operational expense for data centers, often comprising a significant portion of total energy costs….up to 60% of their operating expenses.

If a data center faces west, the increased solar heat gain leads to:

1️⃣ Higher energy consumption for air conditioning systems.

2️⃣ Greater wear and tear on cooling equipment, increasing maintenance needs.

3️⃣ Potentially reduced servers lifespan due to higher and more variable internal temperatures.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀?
Best practices for data center design generally discourage the use of exterior windows, particularly on west-facing walls.

This is not only due to energy efficiency concerns but also because of security and weather-related risks.

West-facing windows or facades are more vulnerable to severe weather events and can represent a physical security risk.

𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆?
Sometimes, the simplest design choices make the biggest difference!

If you want your data center to be energy-efficient, cost-effective, and safe, don’t build it facing west.
