The Difference Between AI and Automation

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, the terms Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation are often used interchangeably, although they have significant differences. Both play crucial roles in improving efficiency and productivity across various industries, but they involve very different approaches to task execution.

1. Definition

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that develops systems capable of mimicking or even surpassing human intelligence in terms of information processing. AI involves the ability of systems to learn from data, understand context, make decisions, and improve themselves over time.
Automation, on the other hand, is the use of technology to carry out tasks or processes automatically, typically without human intervention. Automation does not require “thinking” or learning; it simply follows pre-programmed instructions.

2. Main Focus

AI focuses on decision-making and adaptive learning. AI is capable of handling complex problems, identifying patterns from data, and improving itself. For example, AI algorithms in search engines that learn user preferences based on browsing behavior.
Automation focuses on executing repetitive tasks quickly and consistently. Automation systems follow a set of predefined instructions and perform tasks without change or learning. A simple example of automation is using scripts to send automated emails based on a schedule.

3. Level of Intelligence

AI can operate in dynamic and uncertain environments because it has the ability to learn and adapt to new situations. For instance, autonomous vehicles equipped with AI can “understand” road conditions and make appropriate decisions based on sensor data.
Automation, on the other hand, only works within predefined parameters. It cannot deviate from the given instructions, making it more suitable for stable and predictable environments.

4. Usage and Applications

AI is typically used in situations requiring data analysis, context understanding, and complex decision-making. Examples include chatbots capable of interacting with customers, medical diagnosis systems, or recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms.
Automation is used where efficiency and consistency are needed to complete repetitive tasks. For example, in manufacturing, automation robots are used to assemble products without human intervention.

5. Adaptation to Environment

AI has greater flexibility in dealing with ever-changing environments. It can update itself based on real-time data, making AI systems more dynamic and responsive to changes.
Automation, by contrast, tends to be rigid. Automation systems will fail or require modification when facing changes in parameters or environments that have not been pre-programmed.

6. Implementation Examples

AI: Virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, fraud detection systems in financial institutions, and predictive analytics in business sectors.
Automation: Manufacturing processes involving robots to assemble products, or IT automation systems that perform data backups at specific times each day..

7. Human Involvement

AI requires human involvement to train and provide initial data, but after that, AI can work independently with continued learning from experience.
Automation is typically designed to reduce or eliminate human involvement in executing routine tasks, but still requires human intervention for designing, programming, and maintaining the system.

Conclusion

While both AI and Automation aim to improve efficiency in task execution, their differences lie in intelligence, flexibility, and adaptability. Automation is suitable for simple, repetitive tasks, while AI is ideal for complex situations that require in-depth analysis and decision-making. They are not mutually exclusive and are often used together in modern technological solutions, especially in intelligent automation, which combines the power of automation with AI to create more efficient and smarter systems..

Currently, AI (Artificial Intelligence), especially with the emergence of technologies like ChatGPT, is rapidly influencing the development of data centers.

At the ARCMEP Meet & Talk event held on Thursday, August 15, 2024, attendees gained insights from four speakers who are experts and experienced in their fields, guided by Mr. Erick Hadi, Founder of the Nusantara Data Center Academy.

Here are some of the topics discussed:

1️⃣ Hendra Suryakusuma, Chairman of the Indonesian Data Center Providers Association – IDPRO, outlined the driving factors behind the growth of the data center industry in Indonesia. He explained the key aspects of digital transformation that continue to evolve and how AI is now being implemented in data center operations.

2️⃣ Noegroho Tjiptohardjo, Project Director of PT Anggaran Architeam, highlighted the crucial role of architects in the data center industry, from site selection to automation processes. He also emphasized the importance of data center professionals keeping up with technological advancements, including AI, and obtaining certifications from credible institutions.

3️⃣ Arga Sandi Mirfaqa, Technical Director of PT Meinhardt Indonesia, shared his views on the challenges of building data centers in Indonesia. He also reviewed key aspects that need to be considered in the design and operation of data centers, such as operational and technical requirements standards.

4️⃣ Daniel Edgarth, Senior Mechanical Engineer of NV5 Data Centre & Mission Critical, explained the differences between Conventional and AI-Ready Data Centers. He also discussed the developments in cooling technologies, ranging from Air Cooling (Non-raised Floor), Air Cooling (Rear Door), to Liquid Cooling, as well as the essential role AI plays in optimizing data center operations.

Here are the key takeaways:

Sustainability is the Future: Data center design is evolving beyond traditional metrics like PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness). To achieve true sustainability, data centers must focus on reducing both embodied carbon (emissions from material production) and operational carbon (emissions from energy consumption).

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): PPAs are essential for securing electricity from renewable sources. Collaborative partnerships with external industries are also crucial for sustainable operations. By investing in renewable energy projects, data centers can ensure a steady supply of clean energy.

Energy Efficiency: Implementing advanced cooling systems is vital for reducing overall energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.

High-Density Racks: These racks allow for significant computing power in a limited space, often requiring advanced cooling solutions. Liquid cooling is typically necessary for managing heat, though a combination of liquid and air cooling is common.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI operations involve two main phases—training and inference. While the physical layout of networks and racks may not be critical, optimizing network density and component placement is essential for efficient AI workloads.

Cooling Solutions for High-Density Facilities: High-density facilities often require liquid cooling due to increased heat generation. When adding density to existing data centers, modifying racks to accommodate liquid cooling pipes is key for efficient heat dissipation.

The event was highly interactive and engaging, with exciting games and active audience participation. The curiosity and insightful questions from attendees highlighted the growing interest in the future of data center design.

Nusantara Data Center Academy Conducts Data Center Socialization with ATMI Polytechnic

Continuing the cooperation agreement held with ATMI Polytechnic which was held on June 20, 2024, Nusantara Data Center Academy (NDCA) held a socialization at ATMI Polytechnic Cikarang on July 12, 2024. This socialization was carried out for students of the Mechatronics Technology and Industrial Machinery study program at ATMI Polytechnic Cikarang.

This activity aims to provide a basic understanding of the Data Center Industry and guide participants in the industrial class registration process, as provisions before entering the new academic semester in September 2024.

Understanding Data Centers for ATMI Polytechnic Students

The socialization at ATMI Cikarang Polytechnic was divided into two sessions. The first session was presented by Harry Haryadi, one of the facilitators of the Data Center Industry Class who explained in depth about the initial understanding of Data Centers. The material presented in this presentation includes the definition of Data Center, its types, available facilities, Data Center service providers, cloud computing, and Data Center tier levels. In this presentation, he also conveyed several roles of Data Centers that occur in everyday life.

Data Center Development in Indonesia

The second presentation was delivered by Nawi Jaya, one of the facilitators of the Data Center Industry Class. He explained about the Development of Indonesian Data Centers and explained in detail the various positions available in this sector, as well as the challenges in developing human resources. Nawi also highlighted the great potential and job opportunities in the Bekasi, Cikarang, and Karawang areas as the main destinations for the Data Center Industry in Indonesia, making ATMI Polytechnic a strategic location to hold this socialization.

Industrial Class Participant Registration Flow Process

In addition to providing a basic understanding of the Data Center Industry, this socialization also provides a complete guide to the industrial class registration process. Lutfan as the Curriculum Development of the Nusantara Data Center Academy (NDCA) explained in detail the registration steps, starting from participant requirements to the online registration flow. The presentation provides information about the competencies to be obtained, the learning methods to be applied, and the benefits obtained by participants in this industrial class.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Nusantara Data Center Academy (NDCA) and ATMI Cikarang Polytechnic through this socialization is an initial step to prepare the talent needs in the Data Center Industry in Indonesia. This activity, which is specifically intended for Mechatronics and Industrial Machinery Engineering students, aims to provide a basic understanding of Data Centers and guide the industrial class registration process. With the presentation from Harry Haryadi and Nawi Jaya, as well as a comprehensive registration guide, it is hoped that this socialization can encourage students’ interest in pursuing a career in the Data Center field and provide a positive contribution to the development of the industry in Indonesia.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2024, Nusantara Academy hosted an executive dinner gathering, bringing together 50 industry executives who are influential in the technology sector. The event provided a platform for networking and exchanging ideas on the latest developments in the digital industry, with a particular focus on advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G connectivity, and data centers. The theme of the event was “Pioneering the Future: AI Innovations, Connectivity, and Sustainability in the Data Center Industry.”

The evening was structured as an intimate fine-dining experience, with limited round-table seating designed to foster meaningful discussions. The event featured various activities integrating educational elements, such as case studies, quizzes, games, insight-sharing sessions, and panel discussions on innovation and the future of technology in Indonesia.

The event commenced with a series of solution showcases. Achraf Hegazy, President Director of Legrand Indonesia, presented the Legrand Data Center Solutions, followed by presentations from Kim Yong Ng with Starline Solutions, Benjamin Yap with Raritan Solutions, Eddy Chin with Sunbird Solutions, and Avi Sakhalkar with ZPE Solutions.

Indonesia’s Demographic Bonus

Erick Hadi, Founder of Nusantara Academy, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing Indonesia’s demographic bonus. He highlighted three key areas to maximize the potential of the youth in facing this demographic shift: Education, Employment, and Engagement. He aligned these points with Nusantara Academy’s commitment to fostering sustainable education to develop competent talent, particularly in the data center industry.

AI Development in Indonesia

Following the opening remarks, Irvan Bastian, VP of Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, Tech Infrastructure, and Information Security at Tiket.com, delivered an industry insight session. He discussed the rapid development of AI in Indonesia and the resulting talent shortage. Bastian emphasized that companies leveraging AI will significantly outpace those that do not, stressing the importance of preparing the next generation to be AI-ready.

Developing AI-Ready Infrastructure

Clinton Marshall, Deputy Director of Solutions for APAC at White Space, Legrand Data Center Solutions, then took the stage to discuss “Developing AI-Ready Infrastructure.” He stressed the importance of understanding current data center operations, highlighting issues such as underutilized power resources and the financial implications of inefficient power management.

Enhancing Financial Services Security: Strategies for a Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure

Avi Sakhalkar, Asia Pacific Japan Leader for GTM, Channel, GSI at ZPE, outlined the current challenges in financial services and how ZPE is addressing these issues through cutting-edge solutions that enhance security and resilience.

How Automated Systems and Sustainability in Data Centers Support the Financial Industry

Eddy Chin, Asia Pacific DCIM Specialist at Sunbird, emphasized the significance of sustainability in data centers, particularly in terms of energy reuse, and the need for control within data centers to implement sustainable practices effectively. He also highlighted how automation and advanced monitoring systems can drive efficiency and support the financial industry’s push towards greener operations.

Panel Discussion: Uniting the Future—AI, 5G, Cyber-Attacks, and the Path to Carbon-Reducing Data Centers

The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring Irvan Bastian Arief, PhD, VP of Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, Tech Infrastructure, and Information Security at Tiket.com, Andry Gunawan, Country Manager of NVIDIA Indonesia, and Edward Petrus, Director of PT. Megaroyal IT Comindo. The discussion was moderated by Astrid Malahayati, Head of IT Security Architecture at Maybank. The panel explored the intersections of AI, 5G, cybersecurity, and sustainability, and the potential they hold in shaping the future of Indonesia’s data center industry.

Visit of ITE Singapore to Politeknik Negeri Jakarta

The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Singapore recently visited Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, facilitated by the Nusantara Data Center Academy.

The tour was inaugurated by the Vice Director of Cooperation at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, Rika Novita Wardhani, S.T., M.T., along with representatives from ITE Singapore and Erick Hadi from Nusantara Data Center Academy. This visit fostered an enriching exchange of knowledge and ideas.

During the tour, we delved into the realms of Predictive Analysis and the Classification of Health Issues using Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Machine Learning Techniques. We also explored the Internet of Things (IoT) for Structure Health Monitoring Systems, highlighting the intersection of technology and healthcare.

In addition to these insightful discussions, students showcased their innovative projects, demonstrating the practical applications of their studies and research.
